In Episode 22 of Making Apocalypse Now, we’ll talk about how Dennis Hopper’s own major artistic risk lead to career slump that Apocalypse Now would help fix, how Hopper would bring even more insanity to the production, the inspirations for the photojournalist character, and the story behind the Colby character that was cut from the movie-including the crazy death scene of Colby and the photojournalist that didn’t make it into the final film.

This is often overlooked by Kubrick fans as they're going after the more (online) popular features, but this flick is GORGEOUS in every way. I feel that the core of Kubrick is his photographers mind, just as with David Lynch with his painters mind, are the keys to understanding these mens' work.

To me the scene was like a mixture of the Lotus Eaters in the Odyssey and Hermes leading Priam into the Greek camp in the Iliad but then jammed into the already insane mixture of Vietnam and Heart of Darkness… I LOVE IT. However, it’s really undeniable how much that 15 or so odd minutes broke the flow and pacing of the film.

Apocalypse Now is one of the worst Vietnam movies ever made...a ridiculous plot combined with terrible hokey special effects plus a total disregard for reality, military procedure and logistics punctuated by one of the most horrific real animal abuse scenes ever commissioned by a movie maker creates an experience that should make you want to vomit. It's absolutely amazing anyone can mention this steaming pile in the same paragraph As Platoon, Hamburger Hill or Full Metal Jacket!

When I first saw this movie back in the early '80s, what blew my most was trying to wrap my head around how Coppola (& crew) could've gotten all that psychedelic, metaphorical, surrealistic, and visually lyrical imagery in the script. And at the time, I figured there's just no way that could've all been in the script (not even with all the rewrites). Your work and the amazing details you include from so many different primary sources of the people who actually contributed to this masterpiece really goes to show that the collective madness that became 'Apocalypse Now' really was quite the collaborative endeavor.

I ain't no cinephile. I've just been watching movies for at least 3 times your miserable life span. But I do like Network and I guess the best way to watch it is to buy it. I've already seen it 1st run in cinema but that was around 48 years ago. I'm not sure why it's never left my consciousness other than all the little details that occasionally pop up now and then. And stop begging for money. You're hardly worth the expense.
